You’re looking at what is about to become the most famous van in Pittsburgh. It’s the Pitt Tailgate Van and it needs your help – or, at least your paint. An ad on Craigslist claims that the owners of the van are willing to trade you a pie for your paint (and maybe even a cake if you have some gold color).
My friends and I are looking to paint a van for tailgating but don’t feel buying paint for actual money would be appropriate. Instead, we will offer you pies.
One of our loyal Twitter followers, @Banditelli (of Save Braddock fame), sent us the link to the Craigslist ad last night. So we emailed the creator of the post to find out if they were professional bakers (it just so happens that we have some extra paint):
No, we’re not actual bakers, we just don’t want to buy paint. We feel in this rough economy it’s a good trade.
After a little more digging into this story, we uncovered more information about the potential trade, and how they came up with the idea:
Recently, a Republican politician (Sue Lowden) said we should be able to trade goods and services for health care and we figure in the spirit of bootstrap-puller-uppering we will try this barter. It’s not health care, but it’s caring for your [mental] health!
Bartering for paint is a great idea, but we’re pretty sure that most people will just donate their paint with no need of getting a pie. Unless you want to eat a homemade pie from a random Craigslist stranger! Well, not exactly a stranger. The reply to our email came from the Twitter friend we mentioned above. As it turns out, he is the one spearheading the social marketing for the Pitt Tailgate Van. The other guys are @jar996 and @skere26.
The van itself is a faded red 1985 GMC Vandura. They planned on starting the project with a yellow truck (which would have been perfect given the color scheme of Pittsburgh sports teams), but apparently that deal was a #fail. 8 months later, they have possession of a 25 year old van that only cost them 500 bucks. Sure, it needs some tires and a tune-up, but the van should be ready to go for its first appearance at the Pirates vs. Braves game on May 22nd. It won’t be fully equipped as a tailgating van by then, but it will boast a proud “Let’s Go Bucs” sprayed over the sun-beaten factory red paint.
Having spoke to my business associate the plans have changed! Originally we were going to get a yellow utility truck and THAT was going to use the above color scheme. Since we were unable to do a deal for one+ we plan on painting this van PITT POWDER BLUE. That makes the first venn diagram obsolete See the new graphic for an even worse visual representation. Thank you for your interest and I apologize if you had gold, yellow, or black paint and were hoping to cash in for pies.
+If you have a free fully functional yellow utility truck we may be willing to trade the van for it.
