A jazz bar is opening on Ellsworth Ave. in Shadyside. Introducing Con Alma…

Con Alma is a restaurant and jazz bar located on Ellsworth in Shadyside. Inspired by the rich heritage of jazz in Pittsburgh, Con Alma, which means “with soul,” seeks to return jazz to its rightful place, at the forefront of the local music scene. Con Alma’s house band hosts current Pittsburgh musicians, live jazz five nights a week, and jazz brunch on Sundays. A Latin menu with dishes from South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, with a touch of Asian influence, paired with prohibition style classic cocktails ,new twists on Latin favorites, and a hand selected wine list, featuring varietals from all over the world. –conalmapgh.com

The 1,900 sq ft space that Con Alma will occupy has been on Craigslist after several businesses came and went. One was a tea shop that sold food, another was a wine store, and before all of that was a tapas joint.

The building was also advertised for sale recently for $1,000,000. It has since been taken off the market.

The restaurant space itself is nice, especially with a back deck seating area for the warmer months. The challenge for any business occupying the location is that the kitchen is all electric… a non-starter for many restaurant concepts.

Ellsworth Street isn’t exactly booming, but we’re sure that Con Alma will be. There is a real thirst for live jazz in the city, it’s part of the Burgh’s heritage after all.

Listen to classic jazz with drink specials at our Vinyl Happy Hour 5-7pm Every Weekday (except Tuesday)

If planning to visit Con Alma, you should know that music isn’t free (nor should it be)…

* A $5 music charge per person will be added to each check during live music hours.
