The recent grand opening of Razzy Fresh on Murray Ave guaranteed Squirrel Hill a seat on the fro-yo bandwagon (right next to Oakland and Shadyside). This area has no shortage of ice-cream stores (nor a shortage of pizza or coffee shops), but who eats ice-cream anymore?
At about $.40 an ounce, Razzy Fresh offers 6 random frozen yogurt flavors everyday (9 if you count the swirls). Some of the choices include original, raspberry, taro, cheesecake, red velvet cake, cookies and cream, vanilla, passion fruit, and even a really delicious peanut butter.
The coolest thing about is that it’s self-serve! That means you’re in control of how much you get and how long it takes to get it. After dispensing, you make a left turn and stock up on fruity/crunchy/sweet toppings before checking out.
The second coolest thing is that they stay open until 11pm (even though 12am would be even cooler – at least on weekends).
Back in December of 2009, the owner of Razzy Fresh, James Chen, told Pop City that he chose Squirrel Hill because “the economy feels strong and the customer base feels right”… but does he still feel this way after the neighboring Panera Bread and Barnes and Noble bookstore closed for good? Despite all the businesses closing in the 15217 zip code, Mr. Chen must know what he’s talking about because his yogurt shop has been jam-packed since the first day it opened.
