Snow Lion Imports opened in 2001 in a tiny basement location on S. Craig St. in Oakland. It was a purveyor of cultural goods, mostly from Nepal and Tibet. At Snow Lion, you could find exotic jewellery, a variety of incense, Tibetan prayer flags, meditation cushions, Buddhist statues and even music from Nepal.
After years of diligence in growing the small shop, they expanded to a larger space on the first floor of the building next door. It was one of the only places on Craig Street that offered off-street customer parking.
The shop closed because the owner said it was time to retire after nearly 20 years of running Pittsburgh’s first Tibetan boutique.
Carnegie Mellon University officially purchased the building on May 15, 2019 for $595,000.
At the time of this post, work was being done on the building and the contractors were unsure of what the plans are for the space. If you know, please comment below.
