There’s no reason to be bored this coming weekend! The Silk Screen Asian American Film Festival is about to begin with the 2010 Red Carpet Gala being held this Friday, May 7th, and is promised to be the “most exotic and colorful event held in the ‘Burgh”. Don’t just go to the same old bar you visit every weekend. Try something new and introduce some culture into your life in boring Pittsburgh! The Gala will be at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh. The doors open at 8pm and the party will go on until midnight.
The festival runs from the 7th to the 16th, so the Gala is also the same night of the first film. Check out the flick, then make your way over to the Gala for a vivid cultural experience for the remainder of the evening. And after a fun-filled evening full of exciting entertainment and tasty food, you’ll still have two hours to spare at your favorite local bar (just kidding).
Taste sensational sips and exotic ethnic dishes from Japan, China, India, Korea, and more. Dance with Pittsburgh’s premiere Asian performers. Mingle with celebrities, gaze upon international fashions, and enjoy a world of colorful fabrics and faces.
The opening film that night is going to be Cooking with Stella, directed by Dilip Mehta, an internationally renowned photographer from New Dheli, the capital city of India. The movie is shown at the Harris Theater, which is about a 5 minute walk to the Omni William Hotel where the Red Carpet Gala is located.
A sub continental “Upstairs/Downstairs” from Dipil and Deepa Mehta, this comically delicious exploration of class, ethnicity, and gender premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has been winning rave reviews ever since. Guileless Canadian diplomats in Dehli are unknowing foils for their wily household cook in this hilarious and touching satirical caper. -Silk Screen
