A lot of Pens fans have voiced their disapproval of the “defy ordinary” slogan this season. While it might not be the best Pittsburgh sports campaign ever created, it could be one of the best Pittsburgh commercials ever…
Here’s a breakdown of the visuals:
The city from a distance, CAPA, Harris Theater, Dave’s Music Mine, SouthSide Works Cinema, Pens fans at the Mellon Arena, Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, Rex Theater in South Side, Andy Warhol, girl with safety glasses, a guy at the robotics institute, Downtown pedestrian traffic, The Cork Factory, Shepard Fairey’s art, New Amsterdam in Lawrenceville, a microscope, more Pens fans, Coach Bylsma, new arena construction, YinzCam, American Eagle Outfitters Global Headquaters, roboworld, championship banners, final beam of the new arena, motorcycle guy at CMU, students reading in “The Cut” at CMU, wiffle ball guy at CMU, students crossing the street at Forbes and Morewood, University Center sidewalk at CMU, girl outside Porter Hall at CMU, robot engineers at CMU, a robot being tested at the Robotics Institute at CMU, guys dressed up as penguins, Terrible Towels, Pens fans outside of the arena watching the big screen, a girl in some yellow Kanye West shutter shades, Penguins making incredible goals, and the Stanley Cup.
And the lyrics:
If you are different, you are one of us.
We dream big dreams, we are independant minded, and live life without boundaries.
We demand more from ourselves.
Our drive is fueled by the desire to be extraordinary.
Life in the fast lane is all we know.
We do not conform to the traditional.. while the world explodes with opportunity.
We are innovators, motivators, and creators.
We don’t do things the conventional way, we do them our way.
We aren’t afraid to take chances and we do things that have never been done before.
We go where others fear to go and do what others fear to do.
We don’t wait for things to happen.. we make them happen.
We will not be stopped – not by force, not by adversity.
We believe in ourselves.
We are the new Pittsburgh.
We defy ordinary.
We love this commercial! But seriously guys, is this a commercial for the Pittsburgh Penguins or the Carnegie Mellon University Class of 2012?

The fans that don’t like these commercials are jagoffs. This is some great marketing not only for the Pens but also for the city of Pittsburgh. In case anyone forgot, the Pens play in the city of Pittsburgh, that’s why they are called the PITTSBURGH Pens. Your observation is keen though, after you pointed out all the C.M.U. stuff I think your question is a good one. If they cut out all the cross checks and slapshots, this would be a C.M.U. commercial for sure.
You forgot to mention in your recap that they show the Alcoa Corporate Headquarters on the North Shore twice at the beginning of the commercial.
Good eyes! Thanks for the tip
