Hairy Helmets Interview
Believe it or not, not everyone in the Burgh likes football. But even those non-football watching Pittsburghers know about that guy with the hair. Probably because he’s the most recognizable player on the Steelers… not his face, but his hair. Maybe not even his hair alone, but definitely his hairy helmet. Nick Caruso picked up on this and came up with a great idea. Most of you have seen his products advertised around Boring Pittsburgh. We had a chance to sit down with Nick and learn more about him and his Hairy Helmet antenna toppers.
What is your Pittsburgh background/bio?
Born and raised in Evans City (about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh). I moved to Brooklyn, NY for 10 years and couldn’t take being that far away from the Stillers, Pens, and Buccos. I moved back here in 2009. You can take the boy out of Pittsburgh, but you can’t take Pittsburgh out of the boy.
So how did you come up with the idea for Hairy Helmets?
Honestly, I was just watching Troy do his thing on the field, hair flying out the back of his helmet, and the idea came to me. Once it did, it was a challenge to myself…could I actually make something THAT ridiculous? I’d never tried to make a “product” before, and the whole production experience was me flying by the seat of my pants.
Were there any prototypes for Hairy Helmets? Or did they turn out perfect on the first try?
There weren’t many prototypes, but I did a lot of hilarious research on various doll hair and weaves.
Do you have a Hairy Helmet on your own ride?
You know it!
What’s the funniest thing that happened as a result of driving around with it?
It’s just a lot of fun watching people notice it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been beeped at on the highway by people laughing hysterically and pointing.
Where is the farthest you’ve ever shipped one?
This little guy is traveling all over Steeler Nation. I’ve sent them to California, Illinois, New York, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Utah, South Carolina, Arizona, Texas, Virginia, Florida, West Virginia, Maryland, Colorado, Washington, and Kentucky. I love the fact that he’s dominating the highways of Baltimore, MD. Love it!
Are Hairy Helmets sold in any stores?
Most definitely. Support your local retailers, such as Wildcard in Lawrenceville.
What is the best response you’ve received from a customer?
One Stiller fan (@enophiledude also Burgh Verified) took a video of it in action, set it to the PO-LAM-A-LOO song and sent it back to me. That was the best! Other than that, lots of laughs and a few pics in other parts of the country.
Hairy Helmets were recently referred to as “chick magnets” by enophiledude, do you agree?
Absolutely! First off, what girl wouldn’t want to run her fingers through that mane? Also, girls LOVE guys who also have a sense of humor. The Hairy Helmet perfectly embodies both of these traits.
This is probably obvious, but who is your favorite member of the Pittsburgh Steelers?
Troy, most definitely. He best represents the spirit of The Chief.
If you had to describe him in 5 words or less what would you say?
I’d say, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” because the guy somehow manages to be a complete savage on the field, and yet a really nice, friendly person off the field. The guy is an absolute role model.
What other stuff are you currently involved in?
Do you think Pittsburgh is boring? What are your thoughts on the Burgh?
Pittsburgh is awesome. I’m so glad that I moved back. Go Steelers!
