31st St. Bridge in Pittsburgh After Being Blown Up and Demolished (pic by @pgtraffic) Forget the bridge, most Pittsburghers would agree that they should’ve just blow up Route 28 altogether! The blast happened at 10 AM sharp and traffic was halted for an extra 15 minutes. The debris dropped into the river (back channel) below. Sounds environmentally friendly! Disclaimer: The before pic isn’t actually the part that was blown up, but hey, it’s all the 31st Street Bridge isn’t it?

  The way to tell is because the 40th Street Bridge has 3 deck arches underneath and the 31st Street Bridge only has 2.

  Hi Vims! Washington’s Crossing is another name for the 40th Street Bridge in Lawrenceville.
  
  The bridge received its name because it is located at a historically significant site pertaining to George Washington’s military career. In 1753, then-Major Washington was dispatched to give French forces an ultimatum to negotiate for the return of the lands that today make up Western Pennsylvania to the British or to prepare for a military strike. Crossing the Allegheny on a wooden raft, Washington was nearly killed when his vessel overturned at this site. -from here

I have lived in PGH for seven years. I don’t think this bridge has been open combined for more than a year. They just finished fixing it, now it’s blown up?!?
