Pittsburgh, yinz can wait for the 2 day Amazon Prime shipping to arrive at your doorstep, or starting this week you can select One-Day Pickup. If you see this new Prime Delivery option on the Amazon checkout page, here’s what it means:
Order by 10pm, and you should be able to pick up your package between 9am and 9pm the next day, even on Sundays. Amazon will send you a notification to let you know your package is ready for pickup. A barcode will will be your key to grabbing your goods.
The pickup location is next to Crazy Mocha, so you can support a locally owned coffee shop on your way. What we found odd was the zip code of the pickup location. It was the first time seeing the 15260 zip. Knowing very well that Oakland’s zip code is 15213, this was strange.
It turns out that Pitt has their own zip code… take that, CMU!
Musical Chairs in Oakland
The Amazon pick-up address used to belong to the Maggie and Stella’s Gifts, but they have since relocated to 4000 Fifth Avenue (also owned by Pitt) in the more recognizable 15213 zip code.
Amazon moving into > Maggie and Stella’s moving into > Oakland Bakery moving into > the old Seven Eleven space. Got all that?!
Since the building is owned by the University of Pittsburgh, it means that businesses like Panera Bread, Rue 21, Fuku Tea, Crazy Mocha, and now Amazon, all have Pitt as a landlord.
During the research for this post, we also noticed that the Maggie and Stella’s website has © University of Pittsburgh at the bottom, so it’s owned by Pitt, too?
What is disturbing is that Pitt is using those spaces to open their own businesses. That means less commercial space opportunities for local businesses, and more of Pitt/UPMC style building and land takeovers.
Pickup and Lockers
Since Amazon bought Whole Foods, they put Amazon Lockers in the South Hills and Wexford locations. Presumably the East Side location is too small to accommodate lockers – they also don’t have beer or wood fired pizza. Which leads us to believe that WF will soon be abandoning their current digs and are planning to move out. But where?
In the meantime, go pick up all the sh*t you bought on Amazon last night instead of studying!
