As if the radio situation in Pittsburgh wasn’t already bad boring enough, it just got a little bit worse. On February 15, 2010, B94 (93.7 FM) will become a sports network called “SportsRadio 93.7 The Fan”. This is Pittsburgh and we have the most loyal and hardcore fans in American sports, but shouldn’t FM be for music and AM for talk radio?! Besides, The X 105.9 FM already has sports talk during rush hour (and Pens games).
B94 was on the Pittsburgh airwaves since 1981. They left in 2004 to make way for a classic rock station, K-Rock. In 2007, the top-40′s station returned again, only to move out once more this upcoming February. They’re not exactly moving out of Pittsburgh, just away from their usual frequency on the dial. B94 will be combining with Star 107. Yes, Bubba will be going with them.
This change comes not even 6 months after the demise of Pittsburgh’s hip-hop station, WAMO 106.7 FM. At least you can still hear Kiss FM on 96.1 FM. Pittsburgh radio isn’t much more than a commercial filled absence of variety. Maybe we should just stick to iPods, Pandora, or satellite radio!

The whole radio station in the tri-state is pathetic. Stations play the same tunes as others and on more than one occasion you’ll hear the same song on two stations at once. You have three country stations all by the same name and Y108 who tout the same concerts but try to play it off as one of their own. 95.7 and 96.1 on Sunday nights carry the same advice show. B94 was my only salvation at that time slot and now that they’re gone 100.7 has taken its spot, only that station has a lot of static where the old B94 use to come in loud and clear. Not only that 100.7 still plays the same 10 songs over. It was funny as B94 was saying sayonara it told its listeners (between every song no less) that Star 100.7 wouldnt do that like the rest of the stations do. Yeah right.
I like talk radio and especially WPGB (excluding their homegrown talents) but really, do we need to have talk radio completely devoted to sports? It seems to me this station will not last. It may get past the first few ratings cycles but after the honeymoon period its going to turn into something else. Perhaps all 1950′s and 60′s songs? That would be cool.
I think another option for us sports fans in this city is great, I heard some of the programs on the new station and although they still need to get some of the kinks out, and add a few more bells and whistles like all the other sports talk shows, I like it for the most part. My only complaint is the weekend, night time shows after 10 needs a lot of work! Andre Philaponi is a moron from upstate NY, and doesn’t care about Pittsburgh sports, and Chris Meuller is as bland as can be, he needs someone in there w/him to bounce ideas off of! Otherwise this could be a good thing! I lived in NYC for a while, Went to NYU, and this Station is modeled after the iconic WFAN! Some of the local talent like Starkey, Burton, Colony, Alexander, and Cook, are mixed in with fresh new voices like Gianotti, Vinny, & Seibol! it makes for an interesting listen and I wish them all the best!
This is a sports city so who cares if a music station leaves and brings in sports radio. Deal with it or go bung in Atlanta or somewhere in the south.
Go buy the Lady GA GA CD if you actualy miss B-94! I have heard enough of her!
The decisions impacting the Pittsburgh radio dial are made by people far far away from Pittsburgh! The priority is their national brand, not local content.
screw sports. chances are, being from pittsburgh, we’ll already know whats going on in sports. I.E. Pirates are gonna lose, Penguins are gonna win, Big Ben is gonna pump fake until his arm falls off, roll out of the pocket for no reason and get sacked.
