The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh announced in early October that they will have to close 5 (of 19) branches due to a budget deficit of $1.2 million. Last week, the construction at the East Liberty branch was brought to our attention. Tearing down the libraries so soon? No, the East Liberty branch is not closing. As it turns out, the libraries that are scheduled to close are: Lawrenceville, West End, Beechview, Hazelwood, and the Knoxville and Carrick branches will be merged.
So why the construction at the East Liberty branch? According to the Carnegie Library East Liberty website, that branch will be close until Summer 2010 for renovation. Ah… could that be a 1.2 million dollar renovation? Good question. But in any case, the Lawrenceville branch will remain open until the new East Liberty (A.K.A. “East Side” for those who deny that East Liberty is East Liberty) branch is unveiled. All the others are planned to close by February.
The branch in Lawrenceville has been operating since 1898. In the meantime, Pittsburgh is welcoming casinos while we say farewell to historical libraries.

It seems like many places in East Liberty have been under construction or renovation for at least a year now. I’m hoping that as these things start to re-open the area will be revitalized. It really has the potential to develop into a nice place.
