That’s right, Pitt students! No more bus rides to Squirrel Hill. You are now getting your very own Dunkin Donuts store right smack in the middle of campus. It’s not the most creative addition to college-town, but at least there will finally be somewhere to go after 10pm (other than “The Dirty O“) – and you don’t have to walk all the way down the street like Starbucks and Caribou. The Dunkin Donuts in Oakland is replacing the old Boomerang’s Bar and Grille that used to sit between the Original Hot Dog Shop and Hemingway’s Cafe on Forbes Ave.
Does anyone remember Boomerang’s? How could you forget the $1 Yuenglings all day, every day. You just don’t find prices like that anymore… maybe that’s what drove them out of business.
This guy, Nathaniel Beall, reviewed Boomerang’s for BarSmart.com and loved it. The raving review makes you kinda miss the place:
Boomerang’s is, without exaggeration, one of the best college bars I’ve ever been in. The staff was quick and friendly and the customers defied everything I expect in a college bar – they were intelligent, polite, and having a great time without being obnoxious to each other. I originally went in to do a quick review and ended up hanging out for several hours because it was so fun.
There is almost nothing at all wrong with this place. Boomerang’s is a dream bar for anyone who goes to college. It’s also pretty nice for us old folks as well.

The old Boomerang's Bar and Grille location tuns into a Dunkin Donuts

It’ll always be CJ Barney’s to me.
I love Dunkin’ as much as anyone… but I hate how Oakland looks like a darned strip mall. TMobile store? Really? REALLY!? Meh. Get offa my lawn.
Karen is right. It’s so sad that another damn T-Mobile moved into the castle building that used to be home to the Beehive near Pitt. I think we should blame the building owners and real estate companies for the strip mall effect. It’s really making Pittsburgh, well, BORING.
i walk past this place everyday while they are doing the construction. i can’t wait to get some fatty fat fat before class in the morning. i may end up just living off donuts since all the other food options around pitt are preetty bad. do they deliver?

Thanks for giving the 411 on ‘Boomerangs’ — I’m a little late to the news but I was shocked to see the “Dunkin’ Donuts”! Yes, I’m older and enjoyed the hamburgers and beer from the original C.J. Barney’s – LOL! Nothing was better than hearing the BIG D.J. ‘Flounder’ spin the tunes – he could (and still can, as far as I know) perfectly mix the Stones with top-40 hip-hop. I never saw anything happen in those bars that couldn’t be dealt with diplomatically by the student employees and Pitt Panther linebackers
What will we lose next? Peter’s Pub… Hemingway’s… Fuel & Fuddle? Heck, some of the original places: the ‘O’, C.J. Barney’s, and Zelda’s have been immortalized in Michael Chabon’s book, “The Mysteries of Pittsburgh.” Let’s try to hold on to more of our city’s literary and beer-drinking landmarks! –RPA
Thanks for the comment and letting our readers in on some pure Pittsburgh history! That side of town definitely lacks good late night spots… hopefully something will open soon to bring some entertainment back to Oakland.
