CNNMoney.com recently released a list of what they call the “Best Places to Launch” a small business. Pittsburgh ranks #2 for the large metro area category – second to Oklahoma City. How does that explain the amount of Pitt and CMU students who quickly leave for opportunities elsewhere? The writer even concludes that “those drawn from elsewhere to Pittsburgh’s world-class educational institutions typically collect their degrees and leave.” Sure, Pittsburgh is a great city with great sports teams… but the 2nd best place to start a business? What’s your take?

This has got to be a joke. Pittsburgh for start-ups? What kind of start-ups are we talking about? Definitely not technology stuff. There’s no sense of innovation here whatsoever. The only new businesses that seem to open are banks, cell phone stores, or coffee shops. Capital is almost impossible to raise here, and it takes forever to make progress on projects don’t have a Fortune 500 brand name attached to it. Look at all the empty storefronts and see if the landlord will talk to you if you’re not T-Mobile. If you ask me, Pittsburgh is a place to get a degree and leave in the dust.
there is no such thing as the best place to launch a start-up. start-ups are very difficult to launch but they can be launched from a dorm room or coffee shop. Like the article said, how can Pittsburgh be a great place to launch a start-up when all of the smart people leave so there’s no one left to hire.
