At 4:30 PM on Sunday, January 8, 2012 8:20 PM Sunday September 9, 2012,  the Steelers will play against the Broncos at Mile High Stadium in Denver. 27 years ago, on December 30th, Pittsburgh had a similar AFC Divisional Playoff game on the schedule, and the legendary Myron Cope wrote a song about it called “Deck the Broncos, They’re Just Yonkos” (we won that game). Check out Myron’s performance in the video above and our pathetic attempt at deciphering the lyrics below:

Myron talks about the history of his Deck the Broncos song:

My favorite bar, joint in Brentwood, it was called Dante’s. If a guy came in, you knew he was a total bore and he sat on the stool next to you, we called such guys “yonkos.” So my Christmas carols, Steelers Christmas carols, and I’m going in live on my radio show, and 6:00 news they got a cameraman there see? And they’re gonna say now, live singing from his radio talk show, he’s Myron. And the year was 1984, of course I name the Denver Broncos coming up, they yonkos.

The news reporter introduces Cope’s song:

Well, here it is, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Kind of  like the seven year itch actually, for it was seven years ago that Myron Cope first introduced the classis “Deck the Broncos, they’re just Yonkos.” Now he’s back with a revised 1984 edition, complete with updated player references so it applies to the upcoming playoff game. For acoustical excellence, this was taped in the WTAE radio studios as Myron sang it on the air this morning. But by the way, (?) Price turned down the opportunity to sing harmony, simply because Myron sometimes has trouble finding the melody. The following is not closed captioned for the hearing impaired, for obvious reasons.  So, here it is, “Deck the Broncos they’re just Yonkos!”

The lyrics:

Maestro, please!

Deck the Broncos they’re just Yonkos!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

There’s John Elway, traverse him like a railway!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Trample Elway like he’s the parkway!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Get that rich kid with a manhole lid!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

He faced the Steelers in his debut,
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

We can still see that he needs (?)
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

At Three Rivers they made him chopped livers!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

He met the Steelers and knows they’re killers!?
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Dave (?) is coming up the middle.
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Crack that rich kid, knock out his bicuspid!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

No don’t kiss him, safety blitz him!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Deck that Bronco, he’s just a yonko!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Yoi, Merry Christmas from Myron Cope on sports.

And most importantly, Myron reminds us:

The Steelers were underdogs, but they beat those yonkos.
