Dozen Bakes Shop Grand Opening in Oakland

Dozen Bakes Shop Grand Opening in Oakland

If the long lines snaking along Craig Street and Forbes Avenue this week are any indication, Oakland is ready for a regular cupcake fix.  After giving away free cupcakes all week (and turning Craig Street into Baskin Robbins on 39-cent scoop night), the newest location of Dozen Cupcakes officially opened for business at 11:00 today.  Trombone music and free cupcakes—party in Oakland!

Dozen’s owner James Gray (Andrew Twigg is the other one) is obviously psyched about his new location, which was last home to a beauty shop.  He says he’d been hoping to move into Craig Street for a while, and then one day he was making a delivery to Squirrel Hill and was thrilled to finally see a for-rent sign.  A couple days later, the 500-square foot space was his.

Dozen Cupcakes opens a shop on South Craig Street in Oakland

Dozen Cupcakes is opening a shop on S. Craig St. in Oakland

The rumor about frozen yogurt going to South Craig Street has been cleared up. Dozen Cupcakes has come out of the closet and announced they are the new business moving in next to Starbucks! But don’t worry, there’s still Sweet Berry in Oakland, which serves some of the best all natural frozen yogurt you’ll ever taste.

Hey Oakland: are you ready for desert?

This actually makes more sense. The size of the space would have been much too small for fro-yo, even if it were self-serve. Dozen Bake Shop is already experienced running successful operations out of small locations (Squirrel Hill for example). They are going to do some great business on Craig Street. Imagine grabbing a cupcake and heading over to Starbucks or Kiva Han for a coffee (although Dozen will probably sell coffee as well, so that’s a third choice for caffeine).

Is Razzy Fresh Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt moving to Oakland?

Is Razzy Fresh Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt moving to Oakland?

Back in May, we reported about Dunkin Donuts preparing making a strategic entrance into Oakland. With Pitt and CMU, Oakland is a college-town with too many irrelevant businesses – most of which close before dark. It doesn’t make any sense, and this is one of our gripes here at BPGH. College kids go to class all day, then in the very neighborhood they are stranded in (at least during year one), there is nothing to do at night.

The more fresh-minded businesses that enter Oakland, the better – for everyone. We recently heard from an unconfirmed source that Razzy Fresh is making plans to bring their self-serve frozen yogurt closer to college town. Rumor has it that they are going to open a second location on S. Craig Street right next to Starbucks. (Update: this rumor has been debunked…Razzy Fresh is not moving into that location, but they are moving to Oakland soon.)

President Barack Obama with his Steelers jersey (fantastic shot via jdebner on flickr)

President Barack Obama will be in Pittsburgh tomorrow (Wednesday, June 2nd) to give an address from Carnegie Mellon University. The event will take place at the Wiegand Gymnasium starting at about 1:30pm. Only “special” people are invited to attend, so everyone else will have to listen to the streaming audio here.

You won’t want to go near the university anyway. The campus will pretty much be on lock-down starting at about 8:00am when the University Center, which is where everything is, will close until 3pm. The parking meters on Margaret Morrison, Tech, and Frew are all “yellow bagged” to indicate No Parking. Oh yeah, and the UC garage + College of Fine Arts and Dougherty parking lots will also be no-go-zones. Luckily (unluckily for local businesses) most of the students are gone for the summer, but it must be a major annoyance for the students who stayed on campus for summer school.

The Steelers Superfan is here to save the day!

The Steelers Superfan is here to save the day!

Today was a big day for the Steelers Superfan (also known as Lem Apperson) who was recently accepted into CMU’s upcoming art gallery show dedicated to all things Steelers related. The exhibition is called WHATEVER IT TAKES: Steelers Fan Collections, Rituals, and Obsessions and will premiere in Fall 2010. The Steelers Superfan made his exciting announcement on Twitter (under the alias @lemapp) where he also attached the above pic of his getup. You can check out his costume site here. All we gotta say is, don’t mess with the Steelers, the fans of the Steelers, and especially don’t mess with the Steelers Superfan. Congratulations on getting into the gallery!

Dunking Donuts coming to Pitt Campus on Forbes Avenue in Oakland

Dunking Donuts coming to Pitt Campus on Forbes Avenue in Oakland

That’s right, Pitt students! No more bus rides to Squirrel Hill. You are now getting your very own Dunkin Donuts store right smack in the middle of campus. It’s not the most creative addition to college-town, but at least there will finally be somewhere to go after 10pm (bother than “The Dirty O“) – andyou don’t have to walk all the way down the street like Starbucks and Caribou. The Dunkin Donuts in Oakland is replacing the old Boomerang’s Bar and Grille that used to sit between the Original Hot Dog Shop and Hemingway’s Cafe on Forbes Ave.
