There’s something about saying “closed for good.” Kiva Han Cafe poured their last drink today (2/19/2012), but is it for good – or for bad? Some might be impressed that this locally-owned coffee shop lasted for more than 10 years, despite the Starbucks positioned directly across the street.

Noodles & Company in Oakland
If you like carbs, then you’re in luck. Noodles & Company has your hookup for a bunch of different types of pasta dishes from Asian style pan fried noodles to classic American macaroni and cheese. They also serve soup, salad, and sandwiches all at a reasonable price ($6 – $10 depending on your appetite). Their claim to fame is that the food is made to order and served on real dishes, so it might be a step up from the Panera Bread across the street.

Dunkin Donuts is Coming to Oakland
That’s right, Pitt students! No more bus rides to Squirrel Hill. You are now getting your very own Dunkin Donuts store right smack in the middle of campus. It’s not the most creative addition to college-town, but at least there will finally be somewhere to go after 10pm (other than “The Dirty O“) – and you don’t have to walk all the way down the street like Starbucks and Caribou. The Dunkin Donuts in Oakland is replacing the old Boomerang’s Bar and Grille that used to sit between the Original Hot Dog Shop and Hemingway’s Cafe on Forbes Ave.

UPMC Braddock Hospital Protests @ Pitt
Protesters gathered near the Pitt campus at the intersection of Forbes and Bigelow on Friday, January 8th. The group known as Save Our Community Hospitals was picketing against the closure of Braddock Hospital. Despite a winter storm with a blistering cold windchill, the peaceful gatherers stood strong together and delivered their message to thousands of pedestrians and drivers between 11:30am and 1:00pm.
