 A song about free walnuts

Walnuts all u want’s the title of this song,
Come get yer free walnuts, before em all gone.

Ain’t gonna be no squirlin’ around,
Two shapes fer yer likin’, oval and round.

The city might have a nice Walnut Street,
But yinz ain’t never seen walnuts like these.

So give us a call and bring by your truck,
If yer huntin’ for walnuts, yinz are in luck.

Contest: Share Your Most Epic Pittsburgh Memory to Win a Copy of Moon Pittsburgh!

Win a free copy of Moon Pittsburgh by Dan Eldridge

Win a free copy of Moon Pittsburgh by Dan Eldridge

Boring Pittsburgh has teamed up with writer Dan Eldridge to give you a chance to win a free copy of his latest edition of Moon Pittsburgh.

How can I enter this contest?

Just leave a detailed comment below with your most epic Pittsburgh memory.

It was Dan’s idea:

Since your site is called Boring Pittsburgh, and since there’s obviously a bit of intended irony in the title, why don’t we ask readers to submit their least boring most epic Pittsburgh memory…

Uh, I don’t understand

For example, the drummer from the Pittsburgh band 1,2,3 was asked about his favorite Pittsburgh memory in a recent interview… his answer would have been perfect for this contest:

I think my favorite memory is when the Steelers won the superbowl against the Seahawks, and everyone just stormed the streets. It was wild, people were throwing trash cans through store fronts; i saw a car flipped over and on FIRE out in front of the cathedral in Oakland. The funniest thing i saw that night was these kids who were just blocking off a side street, and had a beer bong, and wouldnt let cars pass unless they bonged a beer. So this middle aged dude with his wife and kids drive by, and they try and get him to bong one, and he says no, so they keep egging him on, til finally he goes “aw, f*ck it” and then just bongs a beer, right there with his little kids in the backseat. Epic Pittsburgh moment, indeed.

How will yinz pick the winner?

There will be three winners total:

  • Dan’s favorite comment wins
  • Boring Pittsburgh’s favorite comment wins
  • To keep it fair, one completely random comment wins

(note: you can only win once)

But all of my memories of Pittsburgh are boring!

That’s another reason why we’re also picking a winner at random, duh.

What exactly do the winners win?

Each winner will receive one free autographed copy of Moon Pittsburgh (2nd edition). Winners will receive their book via snail mail.

How much time do I have to think of an unboring memory?

The contest will end in one week at 11:59pm on Friday, September 9, 2011.

Free Admission to Carnegie Museum 5/19/11

Carnegie Museum will offer free admission after 3:30pm on Thursday, May 19, 2011

Carnegie Museum will offer free admission after 3:30pm on Thursday, May 19, 2011

On Thursday, May 19, the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History will offer free entrance after 3:30pm.

It’s something to do with Association of Art Museum Directors’ Art Museum Day (museums think long names makes them sound smarter than libraries). Coincidentally, International Museum Day is on May 18. Why didn’t the CMA and CMNH celebrate this glorious museum holiday on the same day as everyone else in the world is beyond us, but we’ll take “free” any day of the week!

This is a great gesture, but they really should offer free days once a week or once a month at least (if they don’t already). Andrew Carnegie would have wanted that!

The theme of these year’s Museum Day is supposed to be “museum and memory.”

It’s free to get in but how much to park?
Parking in the museum lot is $5 after 3:30pm

I have ADD and didn’t read the paragraph above, when is it again?
Thursday, May 19, 2011 AFTER 3:30pm – so don’t try going at 3pm and expect to get in for free

Win a $15,000 diamond ring

Are you thinking about popping the big question? Did your hoopty breakdown recently? Are you late with your rent check? This might be your big break! A local jewelry store on Walnut Street in Shadyside is giving away a platinum diamond ring valued at $15,000. But not so fast… you’ll have to earn it first! It’s the Henne Jewelers’ Diamond Dash, and it’s a city-wide treasure hunt that’s free to play.

A flawless $15,000 Mark Patterson diamond has been hidden somewhere in Downtown Pittsburgh…

Pretty generous giveaway considering that their shop was robbed within 8 days of each other at beginning of the year (supposedly they drove a freakin’ truck through the front door).

PopUp Pittsburgh! Up on the Hilltop. May 15th from 1-5 pm.

There will be a bunch of cool stuff to do this weekend at the PopUp Pittsburgh event in the Hilltop. Wait a minute… you mean the Hill District? NO, the Hilltop! All jokes aside, many Pittsburghers never heard of such a place in the city they call home. The Hilltop is a part of town that is comprised of ten neighborhoods in Pittsburgh: Allentown, Arlington, Arlington Heights, Beltzhoover, Bon Air, Carrick, Knoxville, Mt. Oliver Borough, Mount Oliver City,  and St. Clair. PopUp Pittsburgh hopes to spread awareness and “promote an appreciation of the Hilltop community’s current assets and potential, and encourages people from outside the community to experience the richness of the Hilltop’s ten unique neighborhoods.”  In other words.. it’s free!
