The Steel Building the way it should be - without the UPMC logo!

The U.S. Steel Tower (aka the Steel Building) is a major part of Pittsburgh’s identity. It has been the tallest skyscraper in the Burgh’s skyline since 1970.

On June 2nd, President Obama was at Carnegie Mellon University for an important address on the economy. During his speech, the President mentioned Pittsburgh’s beloved Steel Building, and the four letters that have been polluting everyone’s view of downtown since early 2008.

Who would’ve thought that the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s logo would one day adorn the U.S. Steel Tower?

This speech was heard all over the world, and it was free advertising for UPMC. Every time someone on Mount Washington takes a picture of our beautiful city, the photo serves as free advertising for UPMC as well. It got us thinking about the situation and that boring sign.

Time-Lapse From Mt. Washington

Very cool Mount Washington time-lapse video from Ski Man Productions. The music by Rodrigo y Gabriela is perfect for the video and is so upbeat that it almost makes you forget about the cold, dreary winter in Pittsburgh. We would love to see them do another time-lapse like this in the summer when the fountain is on at the point!

Monongahela Incline Technical Issues, Reopens

The Monongahela Incline shut down this morning at around 9am due to some technical problems. By lunchtime, the Port Authority workers had it back in service. It appears that computer problems were to blame. The people who actually use the incline for transportation were lucky since Port Authority had shuttles running up and down Mount Washington until the issues were sorted out.

Good thing no one was riding it when it stopped. There’s a new movie coming out soon called “Frozen“. The plot is about a group of skiers who get stuck on a ski lift overnight. Maybe a group of Pittsburgh filmmakers can make a similar movie about a group of hardcore Steelers fans on their way to a Heinz Field but get stuck on the incline for the whole game.

Tonight is Light Up Night in Pittsburgh!

You might notice a beautiful glow fill the sky above Pittsburgh tonight – that’s because it’s the 49th annual Light Up Night! All of the buildings downtown are supposed to leave their lights on in celebration of the event. This is your chance to see why our city is known for having one of the most beautiful skylines in the country.

Over 100,000 people are expected to join in welcoming the 2009 holiday season in downtown Pittsburgh – and even more if you include South Side, Station Square, and Mount Washington.

Most Downtown stores will stay open past 5:00pm for once! While shopping, be sure to check out unveiling of the Macy’s holiday windows… or, the lighting of the “Highmark Unity Tree” at Point State Park (isn’t it boring how everything in the ‘Burgh has become property of some company or another? Even the freakin’ Christmas tree at The Point! Pretty soon we won’t be calling it Pittsburgh anymore – it’ll be Company XYZ Burgh).
