Maya Design Studio in SouthSide Works

Maya Design Studio in SouthSide Works

A few months ago, we wrote about Joseph-Beth Booksellers and how they moved to across the street. It would appear that the old bookstore is still vacant with “We’ve Moved” posters still taped to the doors and windows. Back in April, the I Made It! Market: Chili w/ the Works craft show was held in the empty space and it was fun, but something’s gotta give. Empty buildings like this are boring!

You might have noticed a really cool sign on the top of the building that says “MAYA” with an upside-down A. How long has that sign been there?! After a quick search, it turns out that MAYA is a big time design firm – in their own words they are a “design consultancy and technology research lab”. The Monongahela Incline shut down this morning at around 9am due to some technical problems. By lunchtime, the Port Authority workers had it back in service. It appears that computer problems were to blame. The people who actually use the incline for transportation were lucky since Port Authority had shuttles running up and down Mount Washington until the issues were sorted out.

Good thing no one was riding it when it stopped. There’s a new movie coming out soon called “Frozen“. The plot is about a group of skiers who get stuck on a ski lift overnight. Maybe a group of Pittsburgh filmmakers can make a similar movie about a group of hardcore Steelers fans on their way to a Heinz Field but get stuck on the incline for the whole game.

The morning will include a discussion about the filmmaking process, including “Getting Started: Where do good ideas, great scripts & talented filmmakers come from?”.
