Free yoga for 30 days! This is great news for all the aspiring yogis in Pittsburgh. Yoga Flow is a new yoga joint getting ready for a grand opening in Shadyside. Yes, we know yoga studios are as common as coffee shops in part of town, but this one sounds pretty cool.

The Uni-Mart Grand Re-Opening
The Uni-Mart on Ellsworth Ave in Shadyside is open again. Except this time around, it’s going by the name “Fuel-On”… at least that’s what the sign on the door said. The Uni-Mart signs are still up so we’ll just have to wait and see. Fuel-On is somewhat misleading since there are no fuel pumps here.

Uni-Mart closed after more than 20 years
The Uni-Mart on Ellsworth Avenue is closed for good. After more than 20 years of steady business, the Shadyside landmark went out with a weekend BOGO liquidation sale.
Now just an empty parking lot, many Shadysiders can remember making late-night Uni-Mart trips – usually after 2:00 am. When the locals bars close, the next stop for a lot of people was the corner of Ellsworth and Summerlea Street where they could grab a bottle of water, a pack of smokes, or some instant noodles. The convenience will probably be missed by locals.
The question everyone wants to know: Did the Uni-Mart close because they got robbed too many times? In September it happened three times within three weeks, by the same woman! Earlier in the summer (of 2009) they even got held-up by a guy with an HIV infected needle.
According to one of the cashiers (the night before the doors were locked), they had to close due to bankruptcy, not robberies. Can’t we assume that going bankrupt might have something to do with being robbed so often? Just Google “unimart shadyside” and almost all of the search results are crime related.

Handmade Arcade, Saturday December 12, 2009
The Handmade Arcade is like no other craft scene you’ve ever seen – it’s a crafty’s dream! Last time, over 8,000 people showed up to support local crafters. Are you having a hard time shopping for certain people in your life? Do you find the malls to be over-priced and boring? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then the Handmade Arcade exists for you. There’s literally something for everyone – thousands of great deals on priceless handmade goods (sometimes even negotiable!).
The best part is that you’ll be supporting local, independent artists and designers (and the Earth, since a lot of the stuff is crafted out of recycled materials!!). Some of the categories include jewelry, paintings, prints, photos, t-shirts, stationary, home decorations, candles, belt buckles, housewares, books, knitted accessories, soaps, and more. Maybe even some Steelers stuff in the mix!

"Lean Back" said the Walnut Street telephone pole
Walnut Street in Shadyside was closed between Bellefont and Filbert today due to a utility post that is on verge of falling over. The pole looks like it’s ready to fall into the Henne Jewelers storefront. According to a fireman on scene, the wind did it. To make matters even more dramatic, a single-phase transformer is attached to the pole. Later in the evening, the yellow tape extended the closure from Copeland to Filbert.
All the typical Walnut Street restaurants/pubs are open – Shady Grove, Doc’s Place, William Penn Tavern, Cappy’s. You are warned that parking (which is already a major downfall to Walnut St) will be even worse than usual. Pedestrian traffic is also forbidden, so the only way to get to these places is by going all the way around – and in cases like Cappy’s you’ll have to go through the side alleyway.

Marc Scott truck delivering equipment

On the set of Love and Other Drugs
Ok fans, stalkers, and paparazzi… we found out where Jake Gyllenhaal (and Anne Hathaway?) will be next! Haddad trucks were spotted earlier hanging around the old Don Allen GM dealership at the intersection of Baum Blvd/Liberty Ave/S. Atlantic. They were transporting equipment and supplies for Love and Other Drugs. Mad props to the set design team (no pun intended)! They really transformed this place from a gutted old car dealership to an electronics store. Click ahead for more pics!

Haddad's Trucks Spotted in Shadyside
As we shared earlier on Twitpic, Haddad’s Trucks were spotted this morning. These days that can only mean one thing – or one of three things… Either the filming of Love and Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal; The Next Three Days with Russell Crowe; or Denzel Washington in Unstoppable.
Can you guess the location from the clues in the picture?

Boarded-up windows in Shadyside - Boston Market on Baume
The Boston Market on Baume Blvd in Shadyside is boarded-up today after G20 protesters did a run-by and threw rocks through almost every window. Tihs was after a larger group was dispersing from a parade-style protest in Lawrenceville. The Mini Cooper dealership and KFC were among others in the area that had windows broken. One guy even threw a rock through a police car windosheild. Watch the video of the Boston Market incident below… Continue Reading ->
