Is Razzy Fresh Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt moving to Oakland?

Back in May, we reported about Dunkin Donuts preparing making a strategic entrance into Oakland. With Pitt and CMU, Oakland is a college-town with too many irrelevant businesses – most of which close before dark. It doesn’t make any sense, and this is one of our gripes here at BPGH. College kids go to class all day, then in the very neighborhood they are stranded in (at least during year one), there is nothing to do at night.

The more fresh-minded businesses that enter Oakland, the better – for everyone. We recently heard from an unconfirmed source that Razzy Fresh is making plans to bring their self-serve frozen yogurt closer to college town. Rumor has it that they are going to open a second location on S. Craig Street right next to Starbucks. (Update: this rumor has been debunked…Razzy Fresh is not moving into that location, but they are moving to Oakland soon.)

No traffic and no students.

No traffic and no students.

Spring break 2010. Oakland is a ghost town. No traffic and no students make this the perfect time to visit Oakland… the only catch is that there’s nothing to do once you get there (especially after 5pm, almost everything’s closed by then). During spring break, some shops even close for the entire weekend – like Crazy Mocha. This is a perfect example of why taxing students was a dumb idea.

Wendy's at Pitt on Fifth Ave in Oakland has closed!

What used to be a Wendy’s on the corner Fifth Avenue and Atwood Street is now a huge empty space in Pitt’s campus (and heart). The doors closed in February and local fast food lovers where heartbroken when they found out the last day to get a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger and Frosty was Valentine’s Day.

"UPMC Closes Community Hospitals - Keep Braddock Hospital Open"

Protesters gathered near the Pitt campus at the intersection of Forbes and Bigelow on Friday, January 8th. The group known as Save Our Community Hospitals was picketing against the closure of Braddock Hospital. Despite a winter storm with a blistering cold windchill, the peaceful gatherers stood strong together and delivered their message to thousands of pedestrians and drivers between 11:30am and 1:00pm.

CNNMoney.com "The best metro areas for small business startups"

CNNMoney.com recently released a list of what they call the “Best Places to Launch” a small business. Pittsburgh ranks #2 for the large metro area category – second to Oklahoma City. How does that explain the amount of Pitt and CMU students who quickly leave for opportunities elsewhere? The writer even concludes that “those drawn from elsewhere to Pittsburgh’s world-class educational institutions typically collect their degrees and leave.” Sure, Pittsburgh is a great city with great sports teams… but the 2nd best place to start a business? What’s your take?
