Handmade Arcade, Saturday December 12, 2009

The Handmade Arcade is like no other craft scene you’ve ever seen – it’s a crafty’s dream! Last time, over 8,000 people showed up to support local crafters. Are you having a hard time shopping for certain people in your life? Do you find the malls to be over-priced and boring? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then the Handmade Arcade exists for you. There’s literally something for everyone – thousands of great deals on priceless handmade goods (sometimes even negotiable!).

The best part is that you’ll be supporting local, independent artists and designers (and the Earth, since a lot of the stuff is crafted out of recycled materials!!). Some of the categories include jewelry, paintings, prints, photos, t-shirts, stationary, home decorations, candles, belt buckles, housewares, books, knitted accessories, soaps, and more. Maybe even some Steelers stuff in the mix!

It wouldn’t be a fair without food! There will be a bunch of cool food vendors selling snacks and treats all day. According to the A-Z list of vendors, Dozen Bake Shop and Coco’s Cafe will be there, probably selling all sorts of tasty cupcakes – get one from each and come back to vote in the BPGH Cupcake Poll.

We almost forgot to mention the cool factor of the venue itself. Located in Shadyside (Emerson Street), the historical Hunt Armory spans as wide as an entire city block (56,000 square feet!). Built in 1916, the Armory was actually where Pittsburgh’s concerts and large events were held, until the Civic Arena was constructed in 1961. As if the largest craft gathering in Pittsburgh wasn’t cool enough, the building hosting the gathering is super cool too.
