The Pittsburgh 48 Hour Film Project

Have fun with your friends. Make a movie. (thanks katinalynn for the pic)

Instead of waiting in line for hours at casting calls, you could be making your own movie. Pittsburgh has undoubtedly been dubbed the Hollywood of the East, so get your cameras out and be a part of it! Don’t know where to start? That’s why you should join the 48 Hour Film Project this summer and get some direction (and a deadline) to translate your ideas to the silver screen.

But I didn’t go to filmschool

You don’t have to be a professional filmmaker to participate in the 48 Hour Film Project, but it’s an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself to complete a fun project within a weekend. It’s a great chance to work with friends or other creative people you’ve always wanted to collaborate with.

This is a contest where the numbers matter:

  • 48 hours to write, shoot, and edit your film.
  • Regular registration is $160 unless you’re late, then it’s $175.
  • The story must be delivered in 7 minutes or less (plus 1 min for closing credits)
  • 1 member teams are acceptable with no limit to how many people are on your team.
  • Up to 3 cameras can be used to produce your short film.

Get your team together

The cool thing about this contest is that it forces teams to put their thinking caps on and solve problems on the fly. As a result, this will make you closer to your teammates and learn a more about each other. It’s the perfect activity for couples, friends, co-workers, strangers, anyone! Work better alone? That’s ok too!

But I’m broke and don’t have film equipment

No worries! Don’t be limited by your equipment. Use that Canon Powershot you got for Christmas back in 2009. Go grab a Flip cam from Costco. Use your iPhone! Be creative and make due with what you have. If you’re determined, you could make a better short film with a used $25 camera from Craigslist than that fully equipped team of 8 pros from the Art Institute. Just go for it and have fun!
