Pittsburgh Valentine’s Day Guide
Even though Pittsburgh is sometimes considered one of the worst cities for dating, some of you lucked out and actually found someone special to share Valentine’s Day with. We put together a few last minute Valentine’s Day ideas for fans of doing everything at the last minute.
Flowers, My Sweet
Whole Foods is a great last-minute alternative to overpriced flower shops that might be closed by the time you get out of work. Make a quick pit stop there for a wide range a fresh flowers. They usually have someone to arrange them nicely for you.
And don’t forget to grab a sweet treat on the way out. Chocolate is cliche… grab a fresh tiramisu or creme brule from the bakery area.
Movie and a Dinner?
Don’t go to the Waterfront when smaller, independent movie theaters can be more romantic and less commercialized.

Ice Skating for Two
Winter isn’t over yet, and there’s nothing more romantic than gliding on ice, holding hands, and helping each other up when you fall. Take your date to Schenley Park for Valentine’s on Ice (map). For just $4 per couple, you get to skate outdoors between 7pm-10pm, pizza, hot drinks, photo, and even chocolates and a free rose to the first 250 couples! (Skate rental $2.50; 18 and over).
If you plan on having dinner Downtown, you can also get your skate on at the PPG Place Sweetheart Skate (map) from 7pm-9pm. The cost is $7 each plus $3 for the skates. See above for the better deal!
Mount Washington West End Overlook
Impress your date by driving towards Mount Washington… but keep driving to the West End Overlook (map). The view there is just as magnificent, but not as noisy and crowded. It is a much better place for making out at the end of a date. But it’s pretty dark there, so just watch out for creepos.
Other Heart Day Suggestions
- Phipps Conservatory, but unfortunately they close at 5pm. One would think they would stay open later for Valentine’s Day.
- Valentine’s Day Party 2011 at Tusca (South Side Works) from 6pm-11pm
- Live Jazz and wine at Andy’s. Usually not open on Monday, but for this special occasion, Andy’s Wine Bar will have the Daniel May Trio starting at 7pm.
Help, I’m Single in the Burgh!
Sorry, we can’t really help you there. But if you like art and music, you can meet other singles at the annual Love of Friends celebration at SPACE Gallery, 812 Liberty Ave (map). Fine-tune your game and practice your pick-up lines before you go.
